With the Rugby World Cup just around the corner and many overseas supporters visiting, we will be looking at different cultures, traditions and practices for our Theme studies.

In Room 1 I would like you to start thinking about your own cultural identity, and your own family history. During the first week the students in Room 1 will be given a blank family tree template to take home and complete
. On the first leaf they will write their name and ethnicity. Then they will write their paternal parents names and ethnicities, then their paternal parents names ethnicities etc. An example is provided below.

The reason for the heads up so early on is that when i was trying to complete my own one it did become a little difficult, so please find time to discuss/research this as a family.

Enjoy the rest of your break.

A big thankyou for such a positive response to the parent interview forms.
I am looking forward to sharing the wonderful things your students are achieving with you and your students, and discussing our next steps.

Mr Baylis.

As a part of our literacy programme we have been reading the story George's Marvellous Medicine. We particularly enjoyed the part that described George making his marvellous concoction for his Grandma.

This gave Mr Baylis an idea and has inspired our latest topic for Procedural Writing. The task is to choose 5/6 ingredients from your kitchen and write a recipe for your own Marvellous Medicine. The ingredients have to be edible, non-toxic, and cannot include any meat or fish. It has to be written out correctly using the procedural writing technisue we discussed in class.

There are some interesting medicines being created and do not be surprised if you student turns up at home with their recipe ready to trial it and see if it works!!

Today we finished our instructions on How To Eat An Ice Cream.
Mr Baylis thought what better way to see if they work, than to test them out. We had alot of fun and found it quite challenging following the instructions exactly.

We then sat with our buddy and discussed the good points, the not so good points, and steps to improve them.
As a class we decided to write one complete set of instructions on How To Eat An Ice Cream. We hope they help!

Wednesday, July 6, 2011

Our current writing focus is to write a procedure correctly using the appropriate technique.

Our procedures include:
- An introduction
- Materials
- Method (explicitly explained)
- Conclusion

Our topic this week has been to write instructions on how to eat an ice cream. We have found this a lot harder to achieve than first thought!!

We had a first aid day here in Room 1 where we learnt important skills to help others if they injure themselves or get themselves into difficulty.

We then had to summarise what we learnt into key pieces of information and use these to create an informational poster that will help anyone know what to do if they come across someone in difficulty.

Click on the pictures below to enjoy.
