Our fun Friday activity for doing our homework this week is an electronics morning. We were able to bring and share an electronic device that we had. Lots of fun check it out!!!

Finally I would like to say a big thankyou to Room 1 for all of the effort and learning you have done this term. Enjoy your break and I will see you bright eyed and ready to go after the break.

Our Very Special Skype Call

Exciting times!!! Yesterday (Tuesday 12th April) we were fortunate to have a webinar via Skype with Professor Toni Krasnic.

He shared with us some wonderful tips and ideas on how to become better learners, tying in with our Key Competency Managing Self.
The information was so valuable we decided to kind of use Toni's CLM + SOS method to best gain meaning.

First we split into 5 groups, compared our individual notes and wrote our ideas down on paper.

We then split into 2 groups and recorded the group ideas onto 1 piece of paper. Removing any ideas that were repeated.

And finally we transferred the ideas onto the computer through the smartboard.

Here is our final mind map highlighting the Key Ideas Room 1 obtained from our Skype call with Professor Toni Krasnic. We would like to say once again a big thank you to Toni, and we hope you enjoy our final mind map.

Into The Book - A wonderful reading website

I have found this really cool website called Into The Book. It helps teach some of the important strategies to help us understand what we have read. It is an american site so the questions are about the USA but the skills involved are still important.

Click on the picture below and try it out for yourself.

Reducing our paper waste

Our goal last week was to try to reduce our paper impact. We intended to do this via 3 ways:

1. When you have finished with paper rip it into pieces or shred it and put it into a bucket of water to make new paper.
2. Sending any messages through email, instead of writing notes.

3. Use a whiteboard or blackboard to write your lines.

Overall we made some slight progress but nothing to be really proud about. I guess it's really hard to break some habits!!!

We attempted to make some recycled paper using the scraps from our recycling bin. Here is Shicaela modelling the results.

Shicaela and Jacqui have written a review about our recycled paper:

The paper that we made is really rough and bumpy! When you use the paper the pen or pencil sinks into the paper. Also the paper is really thick and soft. One side of the paper is smoother than the other because that side was at the bottom. The paper breaks really easy. The difference between normal paper and made paper is normal paper is smooth and it is stronger. Is this worth making? No because it is really hard to use and us children will break it and it is bumpy and your pen sinks in when you write.

So it has been an experience!! I guess time will tell to see if we learnt anything from this exercise

Weekly Rag - Thoughts From Our Classroom

Hello it's James and Serena and this is what we have been learning about this week.
In maths we are collecting data and making stem and leaf graphs and pie graphs. In reading we have been reading stories and answering questions about the story. In writing we have been writing a descriptive writing about a character. We have been doing a diary about how we are going with our paper impact. Today we have been making squishy gloop. We have been doing lots of games and sports\exercise.We think that this week has been a... 'FUN FILLED WEEK'!!! by making things and playing loads of fun games as well as learning new things.

Gloop - Our Fun Friday Activity

Mr Baylis has been thinking about what to do with the people that refuse to do their homework. He tried giving them lines to write during their time, but found he was using up most of his time as well.

So we've changed what happens in Room 1. Every day the people who have done/ haven't done their homework are recorded. On Friday the ones that have completed their homework all week participate in a fun Friday activity. The ones who have lines to do can participate once their lines are completed.

Our activity today was gloop. We followed a recipe from a school journal and tried to make gloop people. There were a few challenges that involved us Relating to Others and Managing Ourselves in a range of different ways. Even though they didn't quite turn out as expected we still had a lot of fun, as you can see below.

Bring on next Friday!!!

Key Competencies - Relating to Others

This morning we discussed as a class what the Key Competency Relating to Others means to us. This is the second Key Competency we will be focussing on in Room 1 alongside Managing Self.

We initially wrote our ideas on the smartboard, then using the software programme XMind, we turned them into a mind map that is below.
A big thankyou to Caitlyn and James who designed the look of our Relating to Others mindmap.

Our attempt to reduce our paper waste - Day 2

Well we've all made a much better effort today in Room 1. We have still had to odd piece of paper needlessly thrown away but it is improving!!

Our recycled paper is developing nicely and we may be up to making our first batch very shortly!!
Mr Baylis is making a big effort to pass any messages on through either email or voice, and only had a couple of set backs today.

Let's see what tomorrow brings!!!

Our attempt to reduce our paper waste

Today was day one in our class challenge to reduce our paper impact. After a quick check (and a quick desk inspection) this was the result:

Not such a good start!! Although it did create a good discussion about why we resorted to old ways so soon after creating and setting ourselves our paper goal.

Well thanks to the recycled paper above we are now attempting to make our own recycled paper, as part of one of our goals. We'll update every day to report on how we are achieving against our goals.

Reducing Our Impact

We have been learning about habitats and environments. We then discussed why these change and what causes them to change. We have started looking at ourselves and how we impact our school environment. We discovered that we waste alot of paper, just check out the photos below. Our current task is to find ways to reduce our paper impact.

These are the 3 we are trialling:
1. When you have finished with paper rip it into pieces or shred it and put it into a bucket of water to make new paper.
2. Sending any messages through email, instead of writing notes.
3. Use a whiteboard or blackboard to write your lines.

If you have any ideas or suggestions on how to do this please share with us!!

This is the amount of paper (and other treasures) we found in the recycling bin after only 2 days!!!
