Samoan Siapo

YAY it's finally finished!! Here's a picture of our completed class siapo and a description of how we made it and what it means.

First we got an A4 piece of paper.
Then we chose our design and copied it in pencil. I chose the fishing net because i like going fishing.
Next we coloured in the black bits with pencil.
When we had finished that we got black paint and went over the pencil lines with the black paint.
Next Mr. Baylis got some hot water and put some normal tea bags in the water.
Then we got the tea bags and dabbed it on the paper until the paper was all covered with tea.
Then we let them dry and taped them all together.
When we had finished we had a big siapo.

Current Events - Pay It Forward

Today for Current Events we read and discussed the following article (If you click on the picture it will take you there):

We then discussed the concept of 'Paying It Forward', whether we should be doing it and examples of when we have done it.
Here is our class definition of 'Pay It Forward': Doing a simple act of kindness because you can, and not expect anything in return.
Here are some of our thoughts and examples:

I think pay it forward is good because when you help people you fell good inside.
When my sister was hurt I took out the bins for her.By Nicholas.

I think pay it forward is good because it's good to help people. When my little brother jumped off my bed and hit his head on the other bed I did his jobs.By Todd.

I think pay it forward is good because others will respect you for it and may return the favour.
When my mum was sore and not feeling well I made her breakfast because it looked liked she needed help. By Tessa

I think it is bad because you might have a little bit of petrol then you give somebody most of your petrol
and you might not have any petrol for you so you will be stuck and there are no petrol places around you.
When my friend James has no food I give him some of my food and I call them presents.
by TANAE

I think pay it forward is good because you are being nice to someone and they might give you back the favour.I gave my sister $2 to buy some noodles.By Caitlyn

The challenge has now been set to Room 1 to Pay It Forward every day for a week, and next Thursday we'll discuss how we got on. If you have any Pay It Forward moments, please share them with us as we'd love to hear them.

Samoa

A Siapo is like a Samoan quilt but not really a quilt. It has a whole bunch of pictures together that show what happens in the village.

They cut bark off a tree and soak it, then they cut the rough stuff off, then they soak it again then they soak it again and dry it. Then they make dye for the earth and leaves and bark and stuff and use it to paint the pictures.
By James, Jacqui, and Shawna.

We are creating our own siapo. Here are the symbols we chose from:

Here are some photos of how we are doing, we will hopefully have a completed Siapo really soon!!

Culture

We started our unit by analysing our own culture and aspects of New Zealand culture.

We've now travelled onto our first world cup country Samoa. We have been researching the national anthem, land, languages among other things. Next week we will be comparing these to our own culture.

We have also been learning and practising a samoan sasa, and have just started a samoan siapo for the class. When these are finished we will share them with you on here : )

Culture

Here in Room 1 we are currently studying differences and similarities between different cultures. We were discussing the question 'How can diverse cultures join together on shared events?' when Mr Baylis remembered one time he experienced this happening first hand. Here it is:

"I was in Canada touring with a choir and we were performing in a concert with a Canadian children's choir. We were all secondary school students and we performed a French Canadian song to show that we'd learned a little bit about their culture. This Canadian children's choir then performed and one of the last songs they sang was Tutira Mai Nga Iwi to show they'd learned a bit about our culture. After the concert we all stood in a big circle and the Canadian children helped us to pronounce the French words correctly, and we helped the Canadian children to pronounce the Maori words correctly."

Two different cultures, coming together for a similar purpose and learning and sharing aspects of their own and other cultures in the process. So it has got me thinking, has anyone reading our blog ever experienced this?? Have you had your own opportunity to participate in an event where different cultures came together for a shared purpose??

Please share these by using the comment link at the bottom of this post.

The Big Event

Today we started discussing our theme topic - The Big Event. We discussed how the Rugby World Cup is bringing thousands of visitors from around the world to our country, each bringing with them their own culture.

We then discussed exactly what a culture is and here is our initial thoughts:

We then tried to define what culture is and this is what Room 1 came up with:

A group of people that follow the same rules and have similar attitudes and behaviours.

Maths Strategies

Our current maths focus is multiplication and division.
At our initial class discussion many of us were a little nervous about learning all of our times tables as we saw it to be such a huge task to do.
So we started talking about different rules and tricks we can do to make it easier for us, for example when you multiply something by 0 it always equals 0.
We then discovered that it's not that scary if we remember the tips and tricks.
Here's a sheet to help us
.

We then had a go at the challenge below. Try it yourself, how many combinations can you do??

Choose 3 numbers below and show how they are related by multiplication or division

e.g. 60 x 3 = 180

Thankyou Room 1 for a great start to the term, your work habits and enthusiasm was fantastic!!
There are some slight changes with regards to homework this term, and your student should be able to explain these to you.
